San Martín has shaped Miami's bilingual media landscape through decades at the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald, rising from community reporter to Managing Editor and fostering digital innovation and visual journalism. Her leadership enhanced coverage of South Florida's diverse immigrant communities and global connections, while her mentorship supports the next generation of Hispanic journalists via NAHJ involvement. As a near-native Miamian and FIU alumna, she bridges local roots with international expertise, amplifying underrepresented voices in the region.

Nancy San Martín, born in East Los Angeles to a Cuban father and Mexican-American mother, was raised in Miami and earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Florida International University. She began her career as a college intern at the Miami Herald, where she was hired full-time after graduation and spent three years covering South Florida’s diverse communities. Her career progressed with roles at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale as an immigration reporter, leading to assignments in Cuba, Haiti, and the Caribbean; chief of the border bureau at The Dallas Morning News in El Paso; and returning to the Miami Herald as World Reporter and Assistant World Editor, covering global stories from Afghanistan to Greenland. She advanced to leadership positions including Visuals Editor for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald, Managing Editor of el Nuevo Herald overseeing journalism and digital growth, and Interactive Editor for the Miami Herald focusing on digital presence and audience engagement. Currently, she serves as Deputy Managing Editor for History & Culture at National Geographic, working with diverse contributors on authentic stories across platforms.
