Fernandez has donated more than $125 million to healthcare and children's causes in the Miami community, including significant support to Miami Children's Hospital. He launched a partnership with the University of Miami and Magic Johnson Enterprises to provide HIV/AIDS services to South Florida's population. Additionally, he has funded pro-immigrant advocacy campaigns through billboards on South Florida highways, positioning himself as a vocal advocate within the Cuban-American community on immigration issues.

Miguel 'Mike' B. Fernandez was born in Manzanillo, Cuba and immigrated to the United States at age 12, eventually settling in South Florida after serving in the U.S. Army. He founded MBF Healthcare Partners, a Coral Gables-based private equity firm established in 2005 that invests in healthcare service companies nationwide. Over his career, he has been founder or majority shareholder of more than 20 healthcare-related companies, including Physician's Healthcare Plans, CarePlus Health Plans, and Navarro Discount Pharmacy, most of which were acquired by major publicly traded companies. Beyond business, Fernandez is deeply involved in Miami's civic and philanthropic landscape, serving on the Board of Trustees at the University of Miami and contributing substantially to healthcare and children's causes throughout South Florida.
