Csonka is the Miami Dolphins franchise's all-time leading rusher with 6,737 yards and 53 touchdowns, defining the team's dynasty era of the 1970s. He led the Dolphins to back-to-back Super Bowl championships and was named Super Bowl VIII MVP. In his final NFL season in 1979, Csonka won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award while still with the Dolphins.

Larry Richard Csonka was born December 25, 1946, and played college football at Syracuse University where he earned All-American honors. He began his professional career with the Miami Dolphins, becoming a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro. Csonka led the Dolphins to victory in Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII, earning MVP honors in the latter. He finished his 11 NFL seasons with 1,891 carries for 8,081 yards and 64 touchdowns, also playing briefly for the New York Giants and Memphis Southmen. Csonka was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989, with his jersey number 39 retired by the Dolphins in 2002.
