Jose J. Vargas joined the Pembroke Pines Police Department in 2001 as a uniformed officer and advanced to the rank of Major. He earned a Doctorate of Education in Leadership and Management from St. Thomas University in 2015, drawn to the institution's emphasis on diversity, academic excellence, and ethical leadership. In addition to his police role, he serves as an adjunct faculty member in St. Thomas University's Master of Science in Educational Leadership program, enriching courses with real-world law enforcement examples. His expertise led to the publication of an article in the prestigious Police Chief Magazine by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Vargas maintains a strong connection to South Florida through his long-term service in Pembroke Pines, just north of Miami. Currently, he continues as a Major with the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
