Acerca de
José Fernández defected from Cuba after four attempts, heroically saving his mother from drowning during the successful crossing at age 15, before settling in Tampa. He starred in high school baseball, earning state championships, and was selected by the Miami Marlins in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Fernández debuted in 2013, quickly becoming the Marlins' ace with a 2013 NL Rookie of the Year award, multiple All-Star nods, and a record 17 consecutive home wins. Deeply connected to Miami as a Cuban immigrant in the city's vibrant community, he energized Marlins Park and embodied hope for defectors. Tragically, he died in a 2016 boating accident off Miami Beach at age 24, while operating the vessel under the influence.
