Born in Guantánamo, Cuba, in 1971, Joel Casamayor won gold in bantamweight at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics before defecting to the United States ahead of the 1996 Games. He turned professional in 1996, capturing the WBA super featherweight title from 2000-2002 and the WBC, Ring magazine, and lineal lightweight titles from 2006-2008. Based in Miami, Florida, he fought several bouts there, including at the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, establishing strong ties to South Florida's boxing scene. Now retired since 2011, he resides in Miramar, Florida, and remains a notable figure in the local Cuban-American community.
