James Joseph Larrañaga Sr. was born October 2, 1949, and built a 40-year coaching career spanning multiple universities before arriving at the University of Miami in April 2011. He is the winningest coach in Miami Hurricanes basketball history, compiling a 270-166 record over 13 seasons at the university. Larrañaga guided Miami to unprecedented success, including their first Final Four appearance in 2023, their first Elite Eight in 2022, and two ACC regular season titles. He retired in December 2024 after stepping down mid-season during his 14th year, concluding his career with 744 total wins.
