As UM Provost from 2017 to 2023, Duerk led academic and research initiatives across the university's schools and colleges, fostering innovation in biomedical imaging and interdisciplinary programs. He supported key events like the annual Smart Cities Miami Conference, co-hosted with the Institute for Data Science and Computing, School of Architecture, and Climate Resilience Academy, addressing threats to natural and built environments in South Florida. His tenure elevated UM's profile as a hub for scientific discovery and education in the region.

Jeffrey Duerk earned his BS in electrical engineering from Purdue University, MS from Ohio State University, and PhD in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1987. He joined Case Western faculty in 1988, became dean of the School of Engineering in 2012, and was named an IEEE fellow in 2015 for contributions to rapid magnetic resonance imaging. In 2017, he was appointed Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, overseeing its 11 schools, colleges, research, and budgetary matters. His deep Miami connection stems from this six-year leadership role under President Julio Frenk. Duerk stepped down from administration in July 2023 to join the UM faculty full-time after a one-year sabbatical.
