Born in New Jersey in 1976, Jason Pizzo earned degrees from New York University, Columbia University, and a J.D. from the University of Miami in 2010. While in law school, he served as an assistant state attorney in the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, prosecuting cases and earning awards like MADD's Prosecution Award of Honor. Elected to the Florida Senate in 2018 after winning the Democratic primary, he represented parts of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and was unanimously chosen as Senate Democratic Leader in 2023 for the 2024-2026 term. In April 2025, Pizzo left the Democratic Party to become an independent, citing its decline in Florida, and announced his candidacy for governor in 2026. He currently serves as Vice Chair of key committees including Appropriations on Pre-K-12 Education and Regulated Industries.
