Gregory Wayne Abbott was born November 13, 1957, in Wichita Falls, Texas, and was raised in Duncanville. He earned a BBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1984. Abbott began his career as a state trial judge in Harris County in 1993, was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court by Governor George W. Bush in 1996, and served as the 50th and longest-serving Attorney General of Texas from 2002 to 2015, where he earned a national reputation for defending religious liberty and challenging federal overreach. He was elected Texas's 48th Governor in 2014 and has been reelected in 2018 and 2022, becoming the first U.S. governor since 1982 to use a wheelchair. As of 2025, Abbott is the longest-serving incumbent governor in the nation, with his current term ending in 2027.
