As a County Commissioner, García has focused on addressing pressing Miami-Dade issues including workforce housing shortages, environmental concerns, and aging infrastructure. He has been a staunch advocate for mental health services and seniors, and was instrumental in establishing early FACT team initiatives in Miami-Dade. In January 2026, he was elected Chair of the South Florida Regional Planning Council, leading regional development and planning efforts across South Florida.

René García was born and raised in Hialeah and began his public service career more than 20 years ago as a City of Hialeah Councilman. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008 and in the Florida Senate from 2010 to 2018, where he championed comprehensive mental health law reforms and healthcare initiatives. In 2020, he was elected as Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 13, representing the Hialeah area, and was re-elected in 2024. García is known for prioritizing workforce housing, environmental protection, infrastructure improvement, and community safety while balancing economic growth with social needs.
