Born in Frederick, Md., and raised in Miami, Michelle Kaufman graduated from the University of Miami, where she contributed to the student newspaper The Miami Hurricane. She began her career at the Detroit Free Press and St. Petersburg Times before joining the Miami Herald, serving as its soccer writer and University of Miami basketball beat writer for 25 years. Kaufman has covered major events like 14 Olympics, six World Cups, Wimbledon, U.S. Open, NBA playoffs, and Super Bowls, while writing a weekly Sunday column on sports. A Miami native deeply connected to her alma mater, she has taught sports reporting at the University of Miami for over 20 years. She is married to Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry and has a daughter, Sophie.
