About
Born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents, Mario Cristobal grew up in South Florida, playing high school football at Christopher Columbus High School before starring as an all-conference offensive tackle for the University of Miami, helping secure national titles in 1989 and 1991. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Miami from 1998-2000, later returning as an assistant from 2004-2006, and became the first Cuban-American FBS head coach at FIU from 2007-2012, where he led the team to a Sun Belt title and bowl win in 2010. After successful stints at Oregon, he returned to his alma mater in 2021 as head coach on a 10-year, $80 million contract. In his tenure, he's rebuilt the program with record wins, including a 13-3 season in 2025 that earned a College Football Playoff National Championship appearance, and a 10-win season in 2024.
