As PortMiami Director and CEO from 2014 to 2021, Kuryla managed operations and capital programs for the largest cruise port globally, driving economic growth amid challenges like the pandemic when passenger numbers dropped from a projected 7 million to 3.5 million in early 2020. He led post-pandemic recovery efforts for cruise lines and was elected Chairman of the Florida Ports Council, enhancing South Florida's seaport advocacy and infrastructure. His 33-year county tenure solidified PortMiami as a cornerstone of the regional economy.

Juan Kuryla began his career with Miami-Dade County in 1987 in the Parks and Recreation Department, later moving to finance and port roles. He joined PortMiami in 1998 as Assistant to the Port Director, advancing to Assistant Port Director for Intergovernmental Affairs and Promotions by 2007. Appointed Port Director and CEO in 2014 by Mayor Carlos Alvarez, he oversaw operations, massive capital development, and strategic planning for the world's largest cruise port. Kuryla holds a BBA and MBA from Florida International University and a Professional Port Manager certification. In late 2021, after 33 years with the county, he left PortMiami to join Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. He now serves as Senior Vice President, Port Development and Construction Management, leading commercial development, construction, and private island operations.
