About
Born in Istmina, Chocó, Colombia, Ilia Calderón studied social work at Universidad de Antioquia before launching her journalism career. She rose to prominence at Univision, co-anchoring programs like Primer Impacto, Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna, and Aquí y Ahora, and making history as the first Afro-Latina to anchor a weekday primetime newscast for a major US network in 2017. Her reporting includes coverage of natural disasters, environmental issues, presidential debates, and high-profile interviews, earning her two Emmy Awards and the RTNDA Paul White Award. Deeply connected to Miami, where she resides with her husband Gene Jang and daughter Anna, she became the first sole anchor of Noticiero Univision in October 2024. Calderón also authored the memoir 'My Time to Speak: Reclaiming Ancestry and Confronting Race,' addressing racism and identity.
