Horst Paulmann was born in Germany in 1935 and emigrated to Chile post-World War II, starting with a small shop in Temuco. He founded Cencosud in 1978, growing it into Chile's largest retailer and the third largest in Latin America, operating supermarkets, department stores, and home improvement chains across multiple countries. Cencosud expanded to Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and the U.S. In 2021, he transitioned leadership to his daughter Heike while remaining honorary president.
