Hakeem Sekou Jeffries was born August 4, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in the Crown Heights neighborhood. He earned his law degree from New York University with honors and worked as a corporate lawyer before entering politics. He served three terms in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012, then was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, where he currently serves his seventh term. In November 2022, members of the House Democratic Caucus unanimously elected him to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader, making him the first African American to lead a party in either chamber of Congress. While based in New York, Jeffries has engaged with South Florida communities on healthcare policy and immigration enforcement issues.
