Gamarra has been instrumental in establishing FIU as a premier institution for Latin American and Caribbean research and public policy analysis. His work as a public intellectual and media commentator makes him a leading voice on Latin American geopolitics affecting the Miami region.
About
Eduardo A. Gamarra earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987 under the mentorship of James M. Malloy, a leading expert on Bolivia and the Andes. He has been affiliated with Florida International University since 1986, where he is a tenured full professor in the department of politics and international relations. From 1994 to 2007, Gamarra served as director of FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), a federally supported National Resource Center that became one of the fastest growing Latin American and Caribbean Studies programs in the United States under his leadership. He is the author or co-author of nearly one hundred scholarly articles and multiple books on Latin American and Caribbean affairs, and has testified before the US Congress on regional issues affecting US policy. Since 2016, he has served as founding director of the Latino Public Opinion Forum at FIU's Stephen Green School of International and Public Affairs.
