Prior to that, he was a U.S. Circuit Judge on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit from 2006 to 2018. His connection to Miami and South Florida stems from pro bono representation of Elian González's Miami relatives in 2000, advocating to keep the 6-year-old Cuban boy in the U.S. against his father's custody claim from Cuba.
