Born on September 17, 1960, in Riviera Beach, Florida, Anthony Carter starred as a wide receiver at the University of Michigan from 1979 to 1982, earning three-time All-America honors, including unanimous selections in 1981 and 1982. He placed 10th, 7th, and 4th in Heisman Trophy voting over three years, was named team MVP as a sophomore in 1980—the first time for a sophomore—and Big Ten MVP in 1982. Carter set a Michigan scoring record with 240 points from 36-40 touchdowns, mostly via receptions, and excelled as a return specialist with 66 kickoff returns averaging 25.5 yards and 70-81 punt returns averaging 11-12 yards. Under his tenure, Michigan achieved a 35-13 record, won two Big Ten titles, and secured victories in the Rose Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl; he captained the team in 1982. Following college, Carter enjoyed a 14-year pro career from 1983-1995, including stints with the Michigan Panthers in the USFL and the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions in the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and the University of Michigan Hall of Honor in 2002.
