Allan James 'A.J.' Burnett, born January 3, 1977, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, was drafted by the New York Mets in 1995 before signing with the Florida Marlins organization. He made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 1999 and pitched there through 2005, establishing himself as a top starter with highlights including leading the National League in shutouts (5) in 2002. Burnett later played for the Toronto Blue Jays (2006-2008), where he led the American League in strikeouts (231) and games started (34) in 2008, then joined the New York Yankees (2009-2011), winning a World Series in 2009. He finished his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2012-2013, 2015) and Philadelphia Phillies (2014), retiring with 164 wins, 2,513 strikeouts, and a 3.99 ERA over 435 games. Known for his curveball and wild pitches (leading the league multiple times), Burnett was a two-time All-Star. He was the first player from Central Arkansas Christian School to reach the majors.
